Discovered in 1892 by Edwin Holmes while making routine observations of the Andromeda Galaxy. Over the next several weeks his comet grew to a 4 or 5 magnitude before fading away.
Most Recent Activity: October 24th, 2007 Comet 17P/Holmes went from 17 to 2.5 magnitude in just a few hours. At that point 17P was only visible with binoculars or through telescope.
As of November 12th, 2007: Comet 17P/Holmes exploded, increasing 1 million times in brightness.17P is now brighter than Jupiter and very visible to the naked eye. The comet's behavior has baffled scientists and they believe it should be visible for months. |
